Detroit Lions head coach Dan Campbell is keenly aware of the challenges that come with success as his team enters the 2024 NFL season with heightened expectations.
After a disappointing loss in the NFC Championship game last season, Campbell immediately recognized the dangers of complacency and entitlement creeping into his squad.
He emphasized to his players that they are “starting over, from Day 1,” to ensure that the same hunger and effort that propelled them to success are maintained.
Campbell drew on lessons from his own playing days under Bill Parcells and coaching experience with Sean Payton, who famously used mouse traps in the locker room to remind players not to get caught up in their own hype. While Campbell chose not to employ that exact tactic, he made it clear that avoiding the pitfalls of past successes would be their biggest challenge.

Quarterback Jared Goff echoed Campbell’s sentiments, highlighting how the Lions have worked to maintain balance within the team despite some players receiving more attention. Goff praised the humility and work ethic of teammates like Amon-Ra St. Brown and Penei Sewell, who, despite earning significant contracts, returned with the same commitment to the team’s success.
Campbell’s focus also extends to how opposing teams now view the Lions. No longer overlooked, Detroit has become a target, and Campbell knows that every opponent will bring their best effort against them.
He reflected on past experiences where teams he played on failed to handle success, leading to a quick fall from grace. This memory serves as a constant reminder for Campbell as he prepares the Lions for what lies ahead.
The Lions, led by Campbell’s relentless drive and Goff’s leadership, are determined not to let last season’s achievements become a stumbling block.
Instead, they aim to build on their progress and remain one of the NFL’s top contenders in 2024.
