In a recent interview, Detroit Lions head coach Dan Campbell provided encouraging updates regarding the injuries of several key players, including Jahmyr Gibbs, Terrion Arnold, Ennis Rakestraw, Carlton Davis, and Hendon Hooker.
Despite a string of recent injuries, Campbell expressed confidence that his players would recover in time for the regular season.
Discussing the various injuries, Campbell acknowledged that Gibbs, who suffered a hamstring injury, and Arnold, who injured his pectoral muscle, were both expected to be ready by the season opener. Although Campbell did not directly address Gibbs’ situation, NFL insider Ian Rapoport reported that the injury was not considered serious. Similarly, Arnold had been having a strong training camp before his setback, but his recovery appears to be on track.
Rakestraw, who injured his ankle, also received praise from Campbell, who mentioned that the rookie had been performing well before his injury.
Rakestraw reassured fans via social media, stating that he was “perfectly fine.” Carlton Davis, who did not participate in Monday’s practice due to a hamstring issue, is also expected to make a full recovery. Campbell confirmed, “Carlton is good, he’s just dealing with this hammy, but he’ll be fine.”
Hendon Hooker, who suffered a concussion in a recent game against the Giants, was able to return to practice on Wednesday. Campbell expressed optimism about Hooker’s availability for the upcoming preseason game against the Kansas City Chiefs, though he stopped short of confirming it.
Due to the injuries, Campbell announced changes to the Lions’ training schedule, including the cancellation of a planned scrimmage. He indicated that adjustments would also be made for Saturday’s preseason game, potentially requiring a few starters to play limited snaps.
Campbell emphasized the importance of managing the players’ health, saying, “We’re gonna have to back down” to avoid further injuries.
