The Boston Celtics have reinforced their front court depth at the onset of free agency, signing reserve center Neemias Queta to a multi-year contract.
This move was confirmed by a league source to MassLive shortly after the Celtics retained Luke Kornet. Shams Charania of Stadium first broke the news of Queta’s new deal.
Initially, the Celtics declined a team option for Queta on Saturday, making him a restricted free agent. Despite this, MassLive reported that the team was keen on retaining him. By signing Queta to a long-term deal, the Celtics have solidified their commitment to him.
During the previous season, Queta played 28 games for Boston, achieving career-highs with averages of 5.5 points, 4.4 rebounds, and 0.8 blocks in 11.9 minutes per game.
Queta joined the Celtics in August after being waived by Sacramento and initially signed a two-way deal. His performances off the bench, especially when veterans Al Horford and Kristaps Porzingis were unavailable, earned him a promotion to the 15-man roster in April.
With Queta and Kornet now under contract, the Celtics have secured 13 players for the upcoming season. Kornet’s contract is for one year, while Queta’s multi-year deal is reportedly not fully guaranteed.
Boston’s projected payroll for the 2024-25 season includes significant salaries for key players such as Jaylen Brown ($49.7 million), Jayson Tatum ($34.9 million), and Jrue Holiday ($30 million). The Celtics’ roster, bolstered by Queta’s retention, is poised for another competitive season.
The team’s remaining free agents include Oshae Brissett, Xavier Tillman, Svi Mykhailiuk, JD Davison, and Drew Peterson. As the Celtics navigate free agency, these strategic moves reflect their focus on maintaining a robust and versatile lineup.
