Manchester United are reportedly contemplating a bid for Chelsea defender Trevoh Chalobah, according to The Independent.
The Red Devils are in dire need of defensive reinforcements this summer, especially at centre-back, following a season plagued by injuries and departures.
Last season, United’s defensive line was severely impacted by an array of injuries, which highlighted the necessity for strengthening their backline. Additionally, the departure of veteran defender Raphael Varane after the FA Cup final and the impending exit of Jonny Evans at the end of his contract further depletes their defensive options. Currently, Erik ten Hag can only count on Lisandro Martinez, Willy Kambwala, Harry Maguire, and Victor Lindelof as senior centre-back options.
In light of these challenges, United have been linked with several potential signings, including Marc Guehi and Jarrad Branthwaite, both of whom have been included in Gareth Southgate’s provisional squad for the upcoming Euros.
Everton’s Branthwaite, despite being crucial to their Premier League survival, could be a target for United, who might leverage Everton’s financial difficulties to secure a cut-price deal.
Manchester United considering £25m bid for Chalobah.
However, Trevoh Chalobah has now emerged as a viable candidate for United’s backline.
The 24-year-old Chelsea defender fits Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s reported transfer strategy of acquiring young, homegrown talents. Chelsea are reportedly open to negotiating Chalobah’s transfer to comply with the Premier League’s profit and sustainability rules, setting a valuation of around £25 million.
Despite his potential, Chalobah missed half of the 2023/2024 Premier League season due to injury, making only 13 appearances.
This situation draws a parallel to United’s acquisition of Mason Mount from Chelsea for £55 million last summer, who also spent much of the season sidelined due to injuries.
United will need to carefully consider Chalobah’s injury history to avoid a similar scenario.
As Manchester United continue to explore their options, Chalobah’s potential transfer could offer a solution to their defensive woes. However, with the ongoing evaluations of other targets and considerations of financial prudence, it remains to be seen whether United will proceed with a formal bid for the Chelsea star.
