Amid growing uncertainty surrounding Dallas Cowboys head coach Mike McCarthy, speculation is rising about potential replacements, with legendary coach Bill Belichick emerging as a top candidate.

McCarthy’s tenure has come under scrutiny, especially after the Cowboys’ humiliating 38-point loss to the Detroit Lions, leaving his future in doubt as the team heads into its bye week. McCarthy is in the final year of his contract, and owner Jerry Jones faces a critical decision about whether to retain him for 2025.

Although Jones has publicly dismissed the idea of making a mid-season coaching change, insiders speculate that the Cowboys may shift gears during the offseason.

Jordan Schultz of Yahoo Sports noted that many league sources believe Belichick could be a primary target if Dallas decides to move on from McCarthy. Belichick, currently with the New England Patriots, shares a strong relationship with the Jones family, which could influence any potential negotiations.

However, hiring Belichick would present challenges. Known for commanding high salaries, Belichick reportedly earned $25 million annually with the Patriots, making him the highest-paid coach in sports. For comparison, Denver Broncos coach Sean Payton ranks second with $18 million per year.

Additionally, Belichick would need to adapt to the unique pressures of working under Jones, who frequently engages with the media, often holding press conferences simultaneously with the head coach.

Despite the speculation, Jones insists no changes will be made during the season, citing differences from past situations, like his decision to fire Wade Phillips in 2010. At that time, Dallas was 1-7, compared to the current 3-3 record.

Whether McCarthy can steer the team to a stronger finish remains to be seen, but the buzz around Belichick continues to grow.
