Leeds United manager Daniel Farke has informed young defender Charlie Cresswell that he is free to leave Elland Road this summer.
This move comes amid a series of transfers as the club seeks financial stability following the sale of Archie Gray to Tottenham for £40 million. With ongoing financial commitments, the club is expected to make more player sales.
Cresswell, an England U21 star, found himself sidelined last season, struggling to secure game time. His frustration became apparent midway through the 2023-24 campaign when he clashed with Farke. Despite a promising loan spell at Millwall where he scored five goals, Cresswell couldn’t cement his place in the Leeds squad upon returning and signing a new deal.
Leeds’ relegation to the Championship initially seemed like a chance for several players, including Cresswell, to shine. However, Farke has decided that the 21-year-old does not fit into his plans.
Reports from Planet Sport indicate that Farke has clearly communicated to Cresswell that he can find a new club during the summer transfer window.
Cresswell had been close to a move to Toulouse, with a £3.8 million deal nearly finalized. However, negotiations fell through on Monday due to disagreements over terms. Despite this setback, Cresswell was seen training with Leeds, hinting that other clubs may soon come forward with offers.
Leeds is also linked with potential transfers involving other key players.
Brighton has shown interest in Willy Gnonto and Glen Kamara, and the Seagulls had a £30 million bid rejected for Georginio Rutter. Junior Firpo, whose contract ends in a year, is expected to be sold to avoid leaving on a free transfer. Patrick Bamford and Joel Piroe have also attracted interest.
As Leeds continues its restructuring under Farke, more player movements are anticipated to balance the squad and the club’s finances.
