Although the Detroit Lions fell short of reaching the Super Bowl this year, their dynamic running back duo, David Montgomery and Jahmyr Gibbs, has been ranked as the best in the NFL.
This recognition comes despite the team’s postseason struggles, highlighting the significant impact both players had throughout the season.

David Montgomery, originally drafted by the Chicago Bears in the third round, signed a three-year, $18 million contract with the Lions after four seasons with the Bears.
Despite an early-season rib injury, Montgomery returned to form a formidable backfield partnership with rookie Jahmyr Gibbs. Together, they made NFL history as the first running back duo to each achieve 1,000 yards from scrimmage and 10 touchdowns in a single season. Their efforts propelled the Lions to the NFC Championship, where they narrowly lost to the San Francisco 49ers, 34-31.
Jahmyr Gibbs, selected by the Lions in the first round of the 2023 NFL Draft with the 12th overall pick, had an impressive rookie season. He accumulated 945 rushing yards, 10 rushing touchdowns, and 316 receiving yards over 15 games, earning recognition as a Pro Bowl alternate and a spot on the PFWA All-Rookie Team. His versatility and playmaking ability made him a crucial component of the Lions’ offense.
Bleacher Report’s Kristopher Knox emphasized the duo’s prowess, noting their significant contributions to the Lions’ offensive stats. Together, Montgomery and Gibbs helped Detroit rank fifth in yards per carry, fifth in rushing yards, first in rushing touchdowns, third in total offense, and fifth in scoring.
Their combined totals of 1,960 rushing yards, 2,393 scrimmage yards, and 24 touchdowns underscored their dominance on the field.
As the Lions look ahead to next season, they aim to capitalize on the strengths of Montgomery and Gibbs to break their long-standing Super Bowl drought, which dates back to 1957.
With high expectations and increased attention on this formidable duo, Detroit fans are hopeful that Montgomery and Gibbs can lead the team to greater success and possibly a Super Bowl appearance.
