The Detroit Lions are facing another significant setback in their offensive line as offensive tackle Connor Galvin has reportedly suffered a torn MCL, according to ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler.

The injury occurred during the second half of the Lions’ preseason opener against the New York Giants when Galvin was involved in a play that led to him being rolled up on. Unable to put weight on his leg, he was carted off the field, and it has now been confirmed that he will require surgery, effectively ending his 2024 season.

This marks the second major blow to the Lions’ reserve offensive line this season, following a shoulder injury to Netane Muti earlier in training camp, which also placed him on injured reserve. In addition to these losses, rookie Christian Mahogany remains sidelined due to a non-football illness, Kevin Zeitler has missed some time, and Kayode Awosika has only recently returned to practice after a brief absence.

Galvin was a strong contender for one of the backup offensive tackle positions, competing with Colby Sorsdal and Dan Skipper for the role. His injury adds to a growing list of concerns for the Lions’ coaching staff, who are also dealing with several other injuries from the preseason opener.

Notably, defensive tackle David Bada suffered a potentially severe Achilles injury, while quarterback Hendon Hooker and wide receiver Antoine Green are recovering from concussions.

Additionally, edge defender James Houston is managing a bone bruise in his knee, safety Morice Norris has a hamstring issue, and defensive end Nate Lynn is dealing with a shoulder injury.

Despite these challenges, Lions head coach Dan Campbell identified Galvin and Bada’s injuries as the most serious, labeling them as “long-term.” The team is expected to return to practice on Sunday, where more updates on these injuries will likely be provided.
