The Detroit Lions announced on June 10, 2024, that they have released rookie linebacker Steele Chambers, a former Ohio State standout.

This move comes as a surprise to many, given Chambers’ strong collegiate performance and his initial prospects of making the Lions’ final 53-man roster.

Chambers, who transitioned from running back to linebacker during his college career, led Ohio State with 83 tackles in his final season. Despite going undrafted, his athleticism and versatility made him a promising addition to Detroit’s roster, particularly in a position where the team has lacked depth.

Analysts like The Athletic’s Colton Pouncy highlighted Chambers as a potential fit for the Lions, noting his athletic traits and potential for growth in a special teams or practice squad role.

Chambers’ college career was marked by significant achievements, including 1.5 tackles for loss, an interception, and a pass breakup, earning him honorable mention All-Big Ten Conference honors.

However, his performance during the Lions’ early offseason practices did not secure him a spot on the team. While Chambers showcased his athletic range and play personality, analysts pointed out that his technique needed refinement.

Dane Brugler of The Athletic mentioned Chambers’ need to improve his ability to shed blockers and maintain run fits to become a consistent NFL linebacker.

The decision to release Chambers indicates the Lions’ confidence in their current linebacker corps, particularly in veterans like Derrick Barnes.

Barnes, who had a career-best season in 2023 with 81 tackles in 14 starts, has shown substantial growth and resilience. With the Lions’ offseason acquisitions and extensions, such as drafting Jack Campbell in the first round and extending Alex Anzalone, Barnes’ role has become increasingly pivotal.

His leadership and improved performance have made him a cornerstone of Detroit’s defense.

Barnes himself acknowledged his development, noting his increased understanding of the game and his role on the team. As he enters his fourth year, Barnes feels more confident and experienced, ready to take on a leadership role both on and off the field.

For Steele Chambers, the journey in the NFL continues as he seeks new opportunities to showcase his skills and secure a spot on another team. His release serves as a reminder of the competitive nature of the league and the challenges undrafted players face in making an impact at the professional level.
