Novak Djokovic began his quest for an eighth Wimbledon men’s title with a commanding victory over Czech qualifier Vit Kopriva.
In his first match since undergoing knee surgery, Djokovic secured a 6-1, 6-2, 6-2 win on Centre Court, finishing in just under two hours. The 37-year-old Serbian player, ranked No. 2 in the world, did not face a single break point throughout the match, closing it with three aces.
Djokovic, aiming for his 25th Grand Slam title, wore a grey support on his right knee after surgery to repair a torn meniscus.
This injury had forced him to withdraw from the French Open after the fourth round last month. Despite the recent surgery, Djokovic expressed satisfaction with his performance and mobility on the court.
“It was very good. I was very pleased with the way I moved on the court today,” said
Djokovic, who extended his career Wimbledon first-round record to 19-0. He acknowledged the unique circumstances of this year’s tournament due to his knee issue and expressed relief at his positive performance in an official match setting.
Djokovic will next face either British wildcard Jacob Fearnley or Spanish qualifier Alejandro Moro Canas for a spot in the last 32, continuing his pursuit of another Wimbledon title under challenging conditions.
