Novak Djokovic shared his thoughts on Andy Murray’s impending retirement during a press conference before the 2024 Olympic tennis tournament at Roland Garros in Paris.
Djokovic, expressing admiration for his long-time competitor, praised Murray’s contributions to tennis. Murray, who recently underwent back surgery to remove a cyst on his spinal cord, had withdrawn from Wimbledon earlier this month and confirmed that the Paris Olympics would mark his final professional appearance.
Murray has already pulled out of the singles competition at the Olympics but will compete in doubles with Dan Evans. His illustrious career includes three Grand Slam titles and two Olympic singles gold medals. Djokovic extended his best wishes to Murray and also mentioned Rafael Nadal, whose future in tennis remains uncertain.
Djokovic, at 37, has no immediate plans to retire despite acknowledging that his career is closer to the end than the beginning.
Having won 24 Grand Slam titles, he still enjoys competing and sees no reason to stop as long as he finds joy in the sport. Djokovic recognized the rise of young talents like Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner, who are poised to lead the next generation of tennis.
Reflecting on the ongoing generational shift in tennis, Djokovic expressed his appreciation for still being able to compete at a high level. He aims to continue playing until he no longer enjoys the competition, emphasizing his passion and commitment to the sport.
