ESPN college football analyst and former Alabama quarterback Greg McElroy has released his highly anticipated SEC football power rankings for the upcoming season.

McElroy’s analysis divides all 16 SEC teams into five distinct tiers, based on their potential for the 2024 season, reflecting both strengths and challenges.

Leading the rankings is the Georgia Bulldogs, whom McElroy ranks as the top SEC team, placing them in the “National Championship Contenders” tier. Georgia, despite some weaknesses, is seen as the strongest in the conference, with Carson Beck, their quarterback, receiving significant praise. McElroy regards Beck as the best quarterback Georgia has had in recent memory, bolstering expectations for the Bulldogs.

Joining Georgia in the top tier are Texas, Alabama, and Ole Miss. Texas, entering its first season in the SEC, is considered a serious national championship contender due to its robust offensive lineup. Alabama, despite concerns about depth, remains a formidable force with returning quarterback Jalen Milroe. McElroy also raises eyebrows by including Ole Miss as a championship contender, highlighting their improvements, particularly in the trenches, and the potential of quarterback Jaxson Dart.

The second tier, “College Football Playoff Contenders,” features Tennessee, Missouri, and LSU, teams expected to challenge for playoff spots but falling short of McElroy’s championship-caliber tier.

In the third tier, dubbed “Spoilers,” Oklahoma, Texas A&M, and Auburn are acknowledged as teams capable of defeating top contenders but unlikely to reach the playoffs. These teams are projected to secure at least eight wins, with the possibility of exceeding expectations.

The “Bowl Game Bound” tier comprises Florida, Kentucky, and South Carolina, teams seen as almost certain to secure postseason appearances but with limited upside, capped at around eight wins.

Finally, the “Work In Progress” tier includes Arkansas, Mississippi State, and Vanderbilt. McElroy suggests that for these teams, making a bowl game would be a significant accomplishment.

McElroy’s rankings provide a comprehensive overview of the SEC landscape as the 2024 season approaches, offering insights into which teams are poised to dominate and which face an uphill battle.
