After just three seasons in the NFL, former first-round pick Gareon Conley is retiring.

Todd Archer of ESPN reported that Conley informed the Dallas Cowboys of his decision, leading to his release. The Cowboys have signed Kemon Hall off waivers to fill Conley’s spot.

Conley, drafted by the then-Oakland Raiders in 2017, struggled with injuries throughout his career. He missed most of his rookie season due to a shin injury and was traded to the Houston Texans in 2019. That year, he made 50 combined tackles, defended 13 passes, and secured one interception.

However, an ankle injury sidelined Conley for the entire 2020 season, and the Texans did not renew his contract. He attempted a comeback last season with the DC Defenders of the United Football League (UFL) and secured a deal with the Cowboys just last month.

Conley’s decision to retire comes shortly after the start of training camp, ending his NFL comeback bid.

Interestingly, Conley’s announcement comes just days after another former Raiders and Cowboys player retired at 28. Conley’s career serves as a reminder of the unpredictable nature of professional sports, where injuries can significantly impact even the most promising careers.
