As Alabama prepares to face Western Kentucky on Saturday, all eyes will be on Kalen DeBoer as he makes his debut as the Crimson Tide’s head coach. Here are five key aspects to keep an eye on during the game:

1. A Strong Running Game: Although Alabama is known for its potent passing attack, establishing a powerful running game will be crucial in this matchup. If the Tide struggles to push through Western Kentucky’s defense, it could signal that significant improvements are needed before their upcoming game against Wisconsin. Offensive coordinator Nick Sheridan is expected to test the offensive line early, particularly evaluating right tackles Wilkin Formby and Elijah Pritchett. Aiming for 100 yards on 20 carries, at five yards per attempt, would be a solid performance.

2. A Trick Play: DeBoer’s offense at Washington often featured trick plays, averaging about one per game last season. With the debut of a new coaching staff, some creative play-calling could add excitement to the game. WR Germie Bernard, a key player in Washington’s trick plays, is now with Alabama, adding an element of intrigue.

3. The First No. 0 Jersey: Linebacker Deontae Lawson will make history as the first Alabama player to wear the No. 0 jersey, a decision approved by DeBoer. The NCAA allowed the use of the number in 2020, but former coach Nick Saban didn’t endorse it. Lawson, embracing the opportunity, will don the “donut” jersey this season.

4. OLB Que Robinson’s Potential: Observers from fall camp have noted that outside linebacker Que Robinson appears ready to step up as Alabama’s leading pass rusher. Although the Tide will likely employ a pass-rush-by-committee approach, the fifth-year senior from Birmingham is expected to lead the charge.

5. Proctor’s Development: Left tackle Kadyn Proctor had a challenging freshman year but showed improvement by the season’s end. After briefly transferring to Iowa and missing spring drills, Proctor has reclaimed his starting position in fall camp. His continued development will be vital for Alabama’s offense.

Other Points of Interest:

Western Kentucky Standouts: Keep an eye on three key Western Kentucky players: QB TJ Finley, who has faced Alabama twice before with LSU and Auburn; WR Willie Taggart Jr., son of the former FSU coach; and offensive coordinator Will Friend, a former Alabama guard and two-time All-SEC pick.

SEC Week 1 Highlights: ABC will broadcast the SEC’s most competitive games on Saturday, including Georgia-Clemson, Florida-Miami, and Texas A&M-Notre Dame, with minimal overlap. LSU will face Southern Cal in Las Vegas on Sunday night. Alabama’s matchup with Western Kentucky comes with a $1.9 million payday for the Hilltoppers, reflecting the increasing costs of non-conference games.

As DeBoer steps onto the field for the first time as Alabama’s head coach, these elements will play a significant role in determining the success of his debut.
