Chris Kapilovic, who now serves as Alabama’s offensive line coach, faced a turbulent coaching year before settling into his new role.
Having found what he hoped would be a stable position at Baylor University in December 2023, Kapilovic was eager to move past the chaos he experienced at Michigan State.
The previous season was marred by the suspension and eventual firing of head coach Mel Tucker following allegations of sexual harassment. Kapilovic and his colleagues were left working under an interim coach, facing uncertainty about their future.
Content with his new role at Baylor, Kapilovic had bought a home in Waco and enrolled his son, Colin, in a local high school. However, just two weeks later, Alabama extended an offer.
Kapilovic discussed the opportunity with his wife, Fiona, and son, who both supported the move despite their recent relocation. Kapilovic acknowledged the emotional and logistical challenges of such a swift change but was encouraged by his family’s positive response.
Reflecting on his past year, Kapilovic recalled discovering late at night that Michigan State’s head coach was involved in scandal, a realization that hinted at impending upheaval. Despite settling into Baylor and making significant adjustments for his family’s sake, the allure of Alabama—an esteemed program where he had previously served as offensive coordinator at Alabama State—was irresistible.
Kapilovic expressed his gratitude for his family’s support, recognizing that their enthusiasm made his decision easier.
He remarked, “You’d have to have your head examined to turn down Alabama, but I felt bad for my family because it had been such a tumultuous year. If they both had said ‘I can’t do it,’ I would’ve really had to think about how we should approach that.”
His son Colin, now attending Northridge High, has seamlessly transitioned into his new environment, helping the team secure a recent victory.
Kapilovic noted that their adjustment to Tuscaloosa has been positive, reinforcing his belief that relocating once more was the right choice. For Kapilovic, maintaining family happiness is crucial in his demanding coaching career.
