Nottingham Forest has launched an ambitious bid to bring back West Ham United star Michail Antonio, signaling a crucial transfer window for both clubs.

West Ham’s summer transfer budget is limited to a modest £51.5 million, necessitating player sales to fund new acquisitions. Meanwhile, Forest must navigate Premier League financial regulations to avoid penalties.

Forest, having barely escaped relegation, needs to bolster its squad significantly. West Ham, under new head coach Julen Lopetegui, faces the challenge of rejuvenating the second oldest squad in the Premier League, requiring as many as seven new signings.

The sales of key players are critical for both teams. Reports suggest that Danny Ings, Kurt Zouma, and Michail Antonio are surplus to requirements at West Ham. Ings has struggled since his £15 million transfer from Aston Villa, and Lopetegui is looking to offload Zouma to acquire two new center-backs. Additionally, Forest has reportedly hijacked West Ham’s move for Brazilian defender Vitao.

Antonio, who will turn 35 next season, has previously expressed a willingness to move. According to The Sun, Forest is planning a “sensational swoop” for their former player, competing with clubs from MLS, the Premier League, and Germany’s RB Leipzig. Antonio often recalls his time at Forest’s City Ground as the pinnacle of his career.

For West Ham, Antonio’s sale is seen as a positive step, paving the way for new striker acquisitions.

West Ham has been linked with several forwards, including Nottingham Forest’s Taiwo Awoniyi and Sevilla’s Youssef En-Nesyri. The latter, who excelled under Lopetegui at Sevilla, is reportedly West Ham’s top target.

Antonio has been a vital player for West Ham since his arrival in 2015, scoring crucial goals, including the last at Upton Park and the first at the London Stadium. His departure would likely facilitate the signing of a new striker, addressing the club’s over-reliance on him, which has hindered progress.

West Ham fans will likely bid Antonio farewell with gratitude for his contributions. The potential arrival of En-Nesyri would mark a significant upgrade, reflecting Lopetegui’s ambition to reshape the squad.

Forest’s move for Antonio and West Ham’s pursuit of new talent underscore the importance of strategic player transactions for both clubs as they prepare for the upcoming season.
