Miami Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa, a former Alabama standout, sustained another head injury during a game against the Buffalo Bills on Thursday night.

Tagovailoa was hurt in the third quarter after colliding with safety Damar Hamlin while attempting to run for a first down. The injury resulted in what appeared to be a concussion, with Tagovailoa showing signs of the “fencing response,” an involuntary reaction to head trauma.

This latest injury adds to a troubling history of head injuries for Tagovailoa, who suffered multiple concussions during the 2022 season. Despite his efforts to reduce the risks, including starting all 17 games in 2023 and leading the Dolphins to the playoffs, concerns about his long-term health remain.

Head coach Mike McDaniel reported that Tagovailoa was “in good spirits” but will undergo further evaluation.

Before leaving the game, Tagovailoa completed 17 of 25 passes for 145 yards, with one touchdown and three interceptions. The Dolphins lost 31-10. The team is expected to turn to backup quarterback Skylar Thompson if Tagovailoa is sidelined for an extended period.

In July, Tagovailoa signed a $212.4 million contract extension with the Dolphins, signaling the team’s commitment to their young quarterback despite ongoing concerns about his health.
