During a Zoom press briefing on Monday, Bret Bielema, Head Football Coach of the Fighting Illini, shared his reflections on Davis. Although Bielema did not directly coach Davis, he encountered him as an opposing coach in the NFL.
Bielema emphasized Davis’ remarkable talent, describing him as a beloved figure at Illinois, highlighting his fervor and dedication on the field.
Davis was a “very loved” player at Illinois and spoke of Davis’ “passion” and “intensity.”
“I just saw an incredibly talented player; checked all the boxes,” Bielema said. “I knew he was going to be a great not just college player, but in the NFL.”
Davis gained notoriety in 2018 for his abrupt retirement announcement during a game between the Buffalo Bills and the Los Angeles Chargers.
Having enjoyed a decade-long career with various teams, Davis, aged 35, leaves behind a legacy in professional football.
The cause of his untimely demise remains undisclosed, pending the results of an autopsy.
