In his first appearance wearing an Alabama football uniform, true freshman wide receiver Ryan Williams delivered an outstanding performance in the Crimson Tide’s season-opening 63-0 victory over Western Kentucky.
Despite being listed as a backup on the depth chart, Williams was unexpectedly called to start, only realizing he would be in the game just before the first play. He made an immediate impact, leading the team with 139 all-purpose yards and scoring two impressive touchdowns.
Williams’ first touchdown was a thrilling 84-yard go-route down the right side of the field in the first quarter. His second came late in the second quarter on a 55-yard dig route, where he showcased his agility by evading two defenders. Reflecting on his debut, Williams expressed his gratitude for the opportunity, stating it was about doing what was needed for the team and expanding the lead.
Notably, Williams, who reclassified from the 2025 class and joined Alabama this summer, is just 17 years old and the youngest player on the team. His rapid rise has impressed his teammates, including quarterback Jalen Milroe, who praised Williams for his work ethic and maturity. Head coach Kalen DeBoer also highlighted Williams’ big-play potential, noting that his performance in the game mirrored his standout efforts in practice.
Before joining Alabama, Williams had already made a name for himself in high school football, having competed in the AHSAA Super 7 Championships at Bryant-Denny Stadium just nine months prior. Although his team, Saraland, narrowly lost the state title, Williams’ 343 all-purpose yards and four touchdowns in that game further solidified his reputation as a top recruit. His remarkable abilities earned him the title of Alabama’s highest-ranked recruit in the 2024 class and the distinction of being a two-time Alabama Mr. Football winner.
Williams initially committed to Alabama in October 2022 but briefly decommitted after Nick Saban’s retirement. However, he recommitted after Kalen DeBoer was named head coach, and Saturday’s game was a clear demonstration of his potential and the bright future ahead.
Alabama will continue its 2024 season with a home game against South Florida, where Williams will aim to build on his impressive debut.
