The Philadelphia Phillies have reportedly re-signed Garrett Stubbs to a one-year split contract, securing his return for a fourth season with the organization.

Stubbs’ deal guarantees him $925,000 in the majors and $450,000 in the minors, according to Ronald Blum of the Associated Press.

This agreement comes as the Phillies face a competitive decision regarding their backup catcher role. Stubbs, who has one minor league option left, may not start the season with the big-league team. His primary competition, Rafael Marchan, is out of minor league options and has faced multiple injury setbacks in recent years, including a hamstring strain, hamate fracture, and lower back issues.

The Phillies value Stubbs’ ability to manage the pitching staff, even as his offensive production has declined over the past two seasons. In 141 games with the Phillies, Stubbs has hit .222/.305/.324 with seven home runs and 39 RBIs. Given the scarcity of catching depth within the organization and the broader market, his signing is a strategic move.

However, it’s likely that J.T. Realmuto and Marchan will start as the team’s catchers on Opening Day.
