Greg Norman, CEO of LIV Golf, recently criticized the intense backlash faced by players who joined the Saudi-funded tour in 2022, describing the abuse as “disgusting.”

In an interview with Bloomberg’s Latitude, Norman praised those who initially defected to LIV, highlighting their resilience amid significant criticism from fans and the golfing establishment.

“The vitriol and hatred was just disgusting,” Norman remarked.

acknowledging the difficulties these players faced as pioneers of the new tour. LIV Golf, now in its third year, has been controversial due to its funding from Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund, with critics accusing it of ‘sportswashing’ the Saudi government’s image.

Players moving to LIV for substantial financial gains were criticized heavily. Tiger Woods notably opposed the rival tour, accusing players of turning their backs on traditional golf institutions.

Phil Mickelson, an early LIV joiner, echoed Norman’s sentiment, urging the golfing community to move past the hostility.

“We need to let go of my hostilities and we all do for the benefit of the game,” Mickelson stated, advocating for a more unified future in golf.

Despite ongoing negotiations between the PGA Tour and PIF, Mickelson emphasized that LIV Golf has positively impacted the sport by introducing elevated events and expanding players’ social media presence.

“The competition between both tours is elevating the sport”.

He concluded, calling for a future without hostility, whether or not a merger happens.
