Hansi Flick Returns to Barcelona to Shape Squad: Key Decisions Await
Barcelona manager Hansi Flick, after a brief holiday in the Balearic Islands, will return to Barcelona on Monday to commence significant discussions with Sporting Director Deco about the club’s transfers for the upcoming season.
Flick, who signed his contract and delivered his initial remarks in Catalan just a week ago, is set to tackle crucial decisions regarding the team’s future.
Accompanied by coaching staff Marcus Sorg, Toni Tapalovic, and Heiko Westermann, Flick will meet at the Ciutat Esportiva training complex.
Key decisions and players to be assessed by Flick and Deco.
Among the immediate issues is the fate of captain Sergi Roberto.
Despite having agreed on a new deal, Roberto’s future with the club is uncertain, with indications pointing towards an exit.
President Joan Laporta has also mentioned the potential return of Joao Felix and Joao Cancelo, provided new agreements can be reached with Atletico Madrid and Manchester City, respectively.
Additionally, Flick will assess the statuses of Frenkie de Jong and Ronald Araujo, both of whom were previously considered potential departures under former manager Xavi Hernandez.
Ansu Fati’s situation will also be reviewed, with the club leaning towards another loan for the young forward despite plans for Flick to evaluate him during preseason.
Eric Garcia and Julian Araujo, returning from loan spells at Girona and Las Palmas, respectively, have realistic chances of integrating into the first team. However, Garcia is attracting interest from Girona.
Other loanees such as Pablo Torre, Sergino Dest, Alex Valle, and Clement Lenglet are expected to be moved on again, either on loan or permanently. Lenglet, in particular, has rejected offers from Saudi Arabia and is looking for opportunities within Europe.
Another pressing matter for Flick is the scheduling of preseason training. Initial plans had training starting on July 8th, 9th, or 10th, but with many players engaged in international duties at the Euros and Copa America, Flick might opt to delay the start to ensure a fuller squad is available.
Barca’s need to strengthen their squad amid financial challenges
Financial constraints continue to cloud Barcelona’s transfer activities, with more clarity expected only by mid-June. Although Laporta insists there is no necessity for major sales, speculation suggests that a significant departure might be inevitable to balance the books.
As Flick and Deco delve into these crucial decisions, the dynamics at Barcelona are set for notable changes as they prepare for the new season amidst financial uncertainties and strategic reshuffles.
