The Miami Heat have settled two of their three two-way contract spots by adding Josh Christopher and retaining Keshad Johnson.
However, the status of Dru Smith, the third two-way contract holder, remains uncertain. Smith, recovering from an ACL tear, did not participate in the Las Vegas Summer League, leaving his position vulnerable.
Despite the Heat’s clear interest in Smith, several standout summer league players could challenge him for the final spot. Isaiah Stevens, a summer league leader in assists, has drawn attention but is secured with an Exhibit 10 contract, preventing other teams from signing him.
Cole Swider and Alondes Williams, both unrestricted free agents, also make compelling cases with strong summer performances. Swider’s three-point shooting and Williams’ leadership in the championship game bolster their chances.
The Heat face a dilemma as they can’t offer a standard roster spot without exceeding the luxury tax. However, two-way contracts can be adjusted without impacting the salary cap, giving the team flexibility.
The Heat may wait until training camp to finalize their decisions on the two-way contracts ahead of the regular season.
