As the New England Patriots navigate the early struggles of their 2024 season, it’s clear their offense requires significant upgrades.

One pressing need is at wide receiver, and ESPN’s Dan Graziano has floated Diontae Johnson, a former Pro Bowler, as a potential trade target ahead of the November 5th NFL trade deadline.

Johnson, who was traded from Pittsburgh to Carolina in the offseason, has been identified as a potential “steal of the deadline” by Graziano.

The 28-year-old wideout has averaged 873 yards per season with the Steelers and is on the final year of a $7 million contract. Picking him up midseason would only cost $3.5 million, making him a valuable addition with a solid track record.

Graziano also mentioned that the Patriots had shown interest in Brandon Aiyuk previously and could benefit from Johnson’s skill set if their defense holds up. However, he cautioned that New England should only pursue Johnson if they plan to extend him long-term.

Trading assets for a rental, especially for a team potentially picking in the top 10 of next year’s draft, wouldn’t be logical.
