In preparation for Week 2, the Jacksonville Jaguars are bolstering their cornerback unit following an injury to starter Tyson Campbell.
Campbell, who sustained a hamstring injury in Week 1, will miss some time, prompting the team to sign Zech McPhearson to their practice squad.
The Jaguars did not need to make a corresponding roster move as they had already lost safety Terrell Edmunds to the Pittsburgh Steelers.
McPhearson, a 2021 fourth-round draft pick by the Philadelphia Eagles, has prior NFL experience, having appeared in 16 games as a rookie. During his time with the Eagles, McPhearson contributed primarily on special teams, seeing significant action in 2022 before missing the entire 2023 season due to an Achilles injury.
Jacksonville’s coaching staff is likely to rely on Jarrian Jones to step in alongside Ronald Darby, with Montaric Brown serving as a backup.
McPhearson’s role in Week 2 is uncertain, though his special teams experience could be valuable. His signing serves as a precautionary measure to ensure the Jaguars are well-prepared in case of further injuries in their secondary.
