Alabama quarterback Jalen Milroe is optimistic about the addition of Jaylen Mbakwe, a true freshman and former five-star recruit, to the Crimson Tide’s offense.
Originally a defensive back and special teams player, Mbakwe made his debut as a wide receiver during a recent practice. Reporters first observed the transition on Friday, sparking excitement about his potential impact.
Mbakwe, a versatile athlete from Clay-Chalkville High School, showcased his adaptability by embracing a new role. Milroe expressed enthusiasm for the move, noting the challenges Mbakwe faces in switching from defensive coverage to running routes.
“It’s pretty cool,” Milroe said. “Seeing him lock into another area of his game and playing receiver is different. It’s great to have him on our side of the ball.”
Milroe also praised Mbakwe’s eagerness to learn under the guidance of wide receivers coach JaMarcus Shephard.
“It’s been good throwing him the ball and getting him involved in the gameplan,” he added.
The team hopes Mbakwe’s presence will enhance the offensive dynamic as they prepare for future games.
Fans may see Mbakwe’s debut as a wide receiver during Alabama’s matchup against Michigan in the ReliaQuest Bowl, providing a glimpse of his potential to contribute on offense.
