Drake Maye’s chances of starting in Week 1 for the New England Patriots are still alive.
After a strong performance in the team’s Week 2 preseason loss to the Eagles, Patriots coach Jerod Mayo hinted that the competition for the starting quarterback role remains open.
Speaking on Friday morning, Mayo acknowledged that the upcoming three days of training camp practices will be critical in deciding who will take the helm when the Patriots face Cincinnati in Week 1.
When asked if Maye could see more first-team reps in the final practices, Mayo was non-committal but acknowledged the rookie’s improvement.
“We’ll see,” he said. “We have a staff meeting later today, and that decision will be made then. He definitely showed improvement yesterday, and we’ll see what happens.”
During Thursday’s game, Maye outperformed veteran Jacoby Brissett, who struggled in his three series, including throwing an interception in the end zone. Maye, who came in later, led two consecutive scoring drives, capping one with a 4-yard rushing touchdown just before halftime.
While concerns remain about the offensive line’s performance, Mayo stated that it wouldn’t hinder Maye’s chances of being named the starter.
