Miami Heat GM Andy Elisburg recently discussed Jimmy Butler’s contract situation on Sirius XM’s NBA Radio.

Elisburg emphasized that both the team and Butler are interested in extending his contract, but Butler must meet specific challenges set by team president Pat Riley to secure the deal.

Elisburg highlighted that there is no immediate rush to finalize an extension, as Butler could potentially become a free agent next year.

Riley has a strategic approach, focusing on timing and cap space, but the fundamental factor is mutual interest. If both parties want Butler to stay in Miami, logistics will follow.

Elisburg acknowledged that Butler is not accustomed to being challenged in this manner. However, Riley and Butler share a strong determination to win, which could facilitate their collaboration. Despite Riley’s public criticisms of Butler’s health and performance, the goal remains a successful extension if Butler proves himself.

Additionally, reports from Shams Charania indicate that Butler plans to play out his current contract and enter free agency in 2025.

Butler aims to secure a significant payday, potentially up to $240 million over four years, depending on his performance next season. While the Heat have struggled to add another star player alongside Butler, they remain open to renegotiating if Butler excels.

Butler’s potential free agency does not rule out a return to Miami.

If he meets Riley’s challenges and impresses the team, the Heat could decide to offer him the lucrative contract he seeks, ensuring his continued presence in Miami.
