Yankees fans are making it clear they want Juan Soto to stick around, but the star outfielder is directing their energy towards the front office.
After the Yankees’ 10-3 victory over the Rockies, in which fans loudly chanted, “Re-sign Soto!” the 25-year-old was asked about the situation. Soto, who was traded to the Yankees in the offseason and is on the cusp of free agency, kept his response short and straightforward:
“I don’t know. They have to talk to [Yankees president of baseball operations Brian] Cashman,” he said via SNY.
Aaron Judge, the Yankees’ captain and star player, echoed the fans’ sentiments, expressing his admiration for Soto’s contributions this season.
“The fans are excited and they’ve got every right to be,” Judge told reporters. “He’s an incredible player who’s done a lot for us this year, and I think they definitely want to see a lot more of that to come.”
While Soto is having a career-best season, hitting .299/.429/.606 with 37 homers and 7.5 WAR over 127 games, he remains focused on the current campaign rather than future contracts.
His impending free agency, however, will undoubtedly be a major talking point as the season winds down, with teams like the Mets, Cubs, and Dodgers potentially vying for his signature. Yankees fans will continue their chants, but Soto’s future remains in the hands of Cashman and the Yankees’ front office.
