New York Yankees slugger Aaron Judge expressed high praise for a fellow American League All-Star during Monday’s pre-game festivities at Globe Life Field in Arlington, Texas.
When asked which opposing player he would like to have as a teammate, Judge immediately pointed to Baltimore Orioles shortstop Gunnar Henderson.
Judge described Henderson as a remarkable talent, highlighting his contributions to the Orioles’ successful season.
“Seeing what [Henderson] is doing for them — they’re in first place, doing their thing — just impressive to watch at-bat after at-bat,” Judge commented. “He works his walks. He plays great defense. Hits the ball out of the ballpark. Hits for average. Great instincts on the basepaths, man. He’s a special talent, for sure.”
Henderson has indeed been a standout performer this season, boasting a .286 batting average with 28 home runs and 63 RBIs in 95 games up to the All-Star break. His performance has only been eclipsed by Judge and Shohei Ohtani in terms of home runs. Moreover, Henderson’s Wins Above Replacement (WAR) score of 6.3 is only slightly behind Judge’s 6.4, underlining his significant impact on the field.
Given Henderson’s rising stardom and his key role in the Orioles’ bright future alongside Adley Rutschman, it seems unlikely the Yankees will acquire him anytime soon. Nonetheless, Judge will get a taste of playing alongside Henderson during the All-Star game, fulfilling his wish for at least one special occasion.
