Seattle Mariners star Julio Rodríguez left Sunday’s game against the Houston Astros after a collision with the outfield wall resulted in a leg injury.
Rodríguez, a two-time All-Star, was chasing a deep fly ball hit by Yordan Álvarez when he crashed into the wall. The impact left a gash on the wall from his spikes and caused him to immediately grab his right ankle in pain.
Despite the painful incident, Rodríguez managed to limp off the field with assistance from a trainer. Although he could put some weight on his injured leg, he did not return to the game. The severity of his injury remains unclear at this time.
Álvarez’s hit turned into an RBI triple, reducing Seattle’s lead to 3-2 in the top of the sixth inning. Rodríguez, who was the 2021 AL Rookie of the Year, has been a crucial player for the Mariners, boasting a .265 batting average with nine home runs, 37 RBIs, and 18 stolen bases in 99 games this season.
This injury is a significant concern for the Mariners as they battle the Astros for the top spot in the AL West. The team entered Sunday’s game trailing Houston by just one game, making Rodríguez’s health critical for their playoff aspirations.
