When Justin Fields was traded to the Pittsburgh Steelers, he viewed it as a chance to reinvent himself within a well-established organization.

Now, after completing training camp and seeing some preseason action, Fields feels confident about the abilities he’s demonstrated. Speaking to ESPN’s Brooke Pryor, Fields expressed satisfaction with his performance, saying:

“I think I’ve shown what I can do. The time I had with the first team in training camp went well, and we grew a lot each day. But ultimately, it’s not up to me.”

The Steelers initially indicated that Russell Wilson would be the starting quarterback for Week 1, although head coach Mike Tomlin has yet to confirm this decision, even as the team’s final preseason game approaches.

Fields has had more preseason reps than Wilson, who has been limited by a calf injury. While Fields has displayed some of the dynamic playmaking ability that made him a standout in Chicago, he’s also struggled with pocket discipline, an area where NFL games are often decided.

Despite Wilson’s starting role being expected for Week 1, Fields remains prepared, focusing on what he can control—his daily work ethic and team interactions. If Wilson falters, particularly given the Steelers’ tough schedule, Fields could be called upon sooner rather than later.

Tomlin has emphasized wanting to see Fields translate his practice performance into game situations, especially in a highly competitive AFC North where the Steelers cannot afford to fall behind early in the season. Fields’ opportunity might arise before the Steelers’ Week 9 bye, depending on Wilson’s performance in the opening games.
