The Los Angeles Lakers are reportedly setting their sights on Luka Doncic, the Dallas Mavericks’ young superstar, as they prepare for life after LeBron James.

According to Kevin O’Connor of The Ringer, the Lakers are strategically positioning themselves for a future without their iconic leader, who turns 40 this December. While the Mavericks have recently found success, reaching the NBA Finals and strengthening their roster around Doncic, the Lakers appear to be planning for a long-term transition rather than making short-term moves to capitalize on LeBron’s remaining years.

This measured approach is evident in the Lakers’ decision to hold onto their future draft picks, indicating they are not willing to mortgage their future for immediate gains.

The possibility of Doncic joining the Lakers aligns with their vision of maintaining competitiveness in the NBA. Doncic, known for his elite scoring, rebounding, and playmaking, could seamlessly fit alongside Anthony Davis, forming a formidable duo that could carry the Lakers into a new era.

Despite the Mavericks’ ability to offer Doncic a historic contract extension in 2025, the Lakers remain vigilant, eyeing him as a potential cornerstone for their post-LeBron strategy.
