Leeds United is reportedly eyeing Fulham’s out-of-contract goalkeeper Marek Rodak as a potential replacement for Illan Meslier, should the latter depart the club.

This development comes after Leeds failed to secure promotion back to the Premier League, finishing third in the Championship and losing to Southampton in the play-off final.

With promotion hopes dashed, Leeds United’s focus shifts to rebuilding a squad capable of competing for promotion next season, even as they brace for potential departures of key players.

Illan Meslier, the club’s current first-choice goalkeeper, has attracted interest from Marseille. Meslier, who has been with Leeds since 2019, initially on loan before making his move permanent, has been a crucial figure for the team. Despite enduring a challenging season that saw Leeds relegated, Meslier recorded 21 clean sheets in 49 games, conceding 44 goals.

Considering the possibility of Meslier’s departure, Leeds United has identified Marek Rodak as a suitable replacement. According to the Daily Mail, Rodak, who is set to leave Fulham after his contract expires this summer, is on Leeds’ shortlist. While a move for Rodak is not yet certain, the free agent status of the Slovakian goalkeeper could offer Leeds a financially viable option amidst their efforts to re-strengthen the squad.

Rodak has had a commendable stint with Fulham, particularly excelling in the Championship. However, his opportunities have been limited in the Premier League, often serving as the second-choice goalkeeper. Seeking more consistent playing time, Rodak is likely to favor a move that guarantees him a starting position. Leeds could provide that platform, although he would face competition from Karl Darlow for the number one spot.

Leeds United’s strategy of potentially securing a quality goalkeeper like Rodak on a free transfer could be a shrewd financial move, allowing the club to allocate funds to other areas of the squad. However, the outcome largely depends on whether Marseille’s interest in Meslier materializes into a formal bid.

As Leeds prepares for another challenging season in the Championship, the club’s ability to effectively manage their key player transfers and reinforcements will be crucial. The acquisition of Rodak, should it happen, could be a significant step towards maintaining their competitive edge in the league.
