Leeds United are not currently on the verge of signing Burnley’s full-back, Connor Roberts, as reported by journalist Graham Smyth on the Inside Elland Road podcast.

Despite recent speculation suggesting Roberts might return to Leeds, Smyth clarified that no deal is imminent. This news comes as Leeds and Burnley find themselves as promotion rivals, complicating potential negotiations.

Leeds, who have already brought back Joe Rodon permanently this summer following his successful loan spell, are navigating a tight budget after their play-off final loss to Southampton. The revenue from Archie Gray’s transfer to Tottenham Hotspur has provided some financial flexibility, but the club must manage their expenditures carefully.

The team needs reinforcements, particularly in central defense and midfield, and the right-back position has also become a concern. With Luke Ayling leaving at the end of his contract and Cody Drameh unlikely to renew his, Leeds’ options at right-back are limited. Sam Byram, although capable, was primarily used on the left last season and might serve better as a backup to Junior Firpo.

Reports from March indicated Leeds’ interest in bringing Roberts back on a permanent deal, following his loan spell during the 2023/24 season. Roberts, who made 15 appearances but only three starts due to Gray’s strong performances, could find a starting role available for him next term.

While acquiring Roberts from Burnley, a potential promotion contender, poses challenges, securing an experienced player with prior promotion success would be advantageous for Leeds. Should an affordable deal present itself, it would be prudent for Leeds to pursue it, despite the difficulties in negotiating with a rival club.
