The Detroit Lions face potential setbacks as rookie running back Jahmyr Gibbs sustained a hamstring injury during practice on August 12, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter.
This development could sideline Gibbs, who left the practice early and is under medical evaluation. The severity of the injury remains unclear, adding to the team’s preseason woes, as they previously lost another key player in their opening preseason game.
Gibbs, the Lions’ 12th overall pick in the 2023 NFL Draft, had an impressive rookie season. He rushed for 945 yards with 10 touchdowns and contributed 316 receiving yards with an additional touchdown, helping the Lions secure their first division title in 30 years and a spot in the NFC Championship game.
Heading into his second season, Gibbs has set ambitious goals, aiming to join the exclusive group of NFL players who have achieved 1,000 rushing and 1,000 receiving yards in a single season.
In addition to Gibbs’ injury, the Lions are grappling with the loss of second-year quarterback Hendon Hooker, who suffered a concussion in a preseason game against the New York Giants. The team signed veteran Jake Fromm to temporarily fill the void while Hooker recovers.
Head coach Dan Campbell expressed uncertainty about Hooker’s availability for the next preseason game against the Kansas City Chiefs, pending clearance from concussion protocol.
The Lions also waived wide receiver Antoine Green after he suffered a concussion in the same preseason game, potentially adding him to their injured reserve if he remains unclaimed. Green was injured during a run-blocking play, further depleting the Lions’ roster as they navigate a challenging preseason filled with injuries.
