The Detroit Lions have strengthened their secondary by signing cornerback Essang Bassey, a move prompted by the recent spate of injuries within their roster.
This roster adjustment comes after undrafted rookie linebacker DaRon Gilbert was waived with an injury designation. Gilbert, who showed promise during the preseason opener against the New York Giants, suffered an injury in practice on Sunday, which head coach Dan Campbell hinted could be a long-term issue.
Bassey, who entered the NFL in 2020 as an undrafted free agent from Wake Forest, brings experience from his stints with the Denver Broncos and Los Angeles Chargers. Over his four seasons, Bassey has appeared in 43 games, making five starts primarily as a nickel cornerback. Last season, he played in a combined 15 games for the Broncos and Chargers, amassing 353 defensive snaps.
The Lions’ decision to add Bassey reflects their current predicament, with multiple cornerbacks dealing with injuries. Both Terrion Arnold and Ennis Rakestraw exited Monday’s practice with upper body and ankle injuries, respectively, further depleting the team’s depth.
With Emmanuel Moseley already out indefinitely due to a torn pectoral muscle, Bassey’s addition is crucial as the team approaches its second preseason game.
