The Texas Longhorns football team is entering its first season in the Southeastern Conference with high expectations, particularly in their running back unit.

CBS Sports recently ranked Texas’ running back room among the top four in the nation for 2024, placing them in elite company alongside Ohio State, Georgia, and Kansas.

Despite losing leading rusher Jonathan Brooks to the NFL, the Longhorns boast a formidable backfield.

CJ Baxter, who was the top-ranked running back in the 2023 recruiting class, will take on a more significant role. Baxter had a promising end to his freshman season, with standout performances including a 100-yard game against Iowa State and an impressive outing in the Sugar Bowl against Washington, where he averaged over 7 yards per carry.

Complementing Baxter is Jaydon Blue, who rushed for 398 yards last season with an average of 6.12 yards per carry. Blue also proved to be a versatile threat, catching 14 passes for 135 yards. This duo’s synergy is bolstered by the addition of Jerrick Gibson, the No. 3 running back recruit in the 2024 class.

The Longhorns’ well-rounded running back unit is expected to be a key asset as they navigate the competitive SEC landscape. Jaydon Blue expressed confidence in the one-two punch he forms with Baxter, setting high expectations for Texas fans.

As the season approaches, the Longhorns’ running back corps stands out as a vital component of their strategy, promising to make a significant impact in their new conference.
