The Philadelphia Phillies have bolstered their starting rotation by acquiring Jesús Luzardo from the Miami Marlins, a move that solidifies their pitching alongside Zack Wheeler and Aaron Nola.

Luzardo, a 27-year-old left-handed pitcher, is expected to be a cornerstone of the team’s rotation. However, his arrival has set the stage for significant roster adjustments, with several key players potentially exiting ahead of the 2025 season.

Taijuan Walker

Veteran right-hander Taijuan Walker appears to be one of the most likely departures. After signing a four-year, $72 million deal in 2022, Walker’s first season in Philadelphia was promising, with 15 wins.

Yet, his 2024 campaign was disastrous, marred by injuries and poor performance, resulting in a 3-7 record with a 7.10 ERA. With Luzardo now firmly in the rotation, Walker’s struggles and hefty contract make him a prime candidate for the trade block.

Alec Bohm

Third baseman Alec Bohm could also see his tenure with the Phillies end. While he contributed 15 home runs and 97 RBIs during the regular season, postseason inconsistencies and declining clutch performances make him expendable.

At 28, Bohm remains a valuable trade asset, and the Phillies could use him to acquire a marquee player, potentially filling critical gaps in their lineup.

Ranger Suárez

Starter Ranger Suárez, a consistent performer in recent years, may also be on his way out.

Durability concerns in 2024 and the organization’s decision to extend Cristopher Sánchez instead of Suárez suggest he is not in their long-term plans. Represented by Scott Boras, Suárez is unlikely to agree to a team-friendly extension, making a trade a logical option to maximize his value.

The Luzardo trade not only strengthens the Phillies’ rotation but also signals their intent to reshape the roster. By addressing weaknesses and leveraging trade assets, the organization aims to position itself as a stronger contender in the years ahead.
