Manchester United is bracing for a critical FA Cup semi-final encounter against Coventry this weekend, with manager Erik ten Hag facing a daunting challenge due to a multitude of injury woes
The team’s hopes hinge on the fitness of key defender Harry Maguire, who is battling to recover amidst a defensive crisis.
Set to unfold at Wembley Stadium on Sunday, the clash against Coventry presents a significant test for the Red Devils, who are already contending with several defensive absences.
The likes of Raphael Varane, Lisandro Martinez, Luke Shaw, Victor Lindelof, Jonny Evans, and Tyrell Malacia are all sidelined due to various injuries.
Furthermore, doubts persist regarding Maguire’s availability following his absence from training sessions this week, stemming from an injury sustained in the previous match against Bournemouth.
“Harry [Maguire], all game against Bournemouth he struggled, he had an issue, he had a small injury, he didn’t train this week so far. But now he’s back on the pitch.
“So, we expect him today back in the team training. He will be available I think, I hope, for Sunday.”
Brazilian winger Antony and midfielder Scott McTominay should also be in contention?
“Yeah, Antony and Scott [McTominay] I expect them to be back. Scott didn’t train all week, partial on Wednesday, today I expect him full. Antony did train the whole week.”
The absence of French striker Anthony Martial, who continues to be sidelined with a groin issue, further compounds Manchester United’s injury woes.
Despite the adversity, Ten Hag remains steadfast in his belief that his side can emerge victorious at Wembley.
“We did our job and we are prepared, so we know their team, we know how they play, we know the individual abilities of the players.
“Of course, also we know the manager, a former United player, striker, his long period there, he’s doing a fantastic job there. So, we know a lot about them. Of course they are dangerous, they are in the semi-final.
“It’s logical. Last season, they were that far away [gestures small gap] from being promoted to the Premier League. So, they do a fantastic job over there. We have seen the game against Wolves, in the quarter-final, the mentality in the team is fabulous, so we have to play to our best levels.”
He underscores the team’s meticulous preparation and deep understanding of Coventry’s playing style and individual strengths as key factors in their strategy.
Following the pivotal clash against Coventry, Manchester United’s resilience will be tested once again as they gear up for a midweek Premier League fixture against relegation-threatened Sheffield United.
The consecutive high-stakes encounters underscore the importance of depth and resilience in navigating through the challenges of a grueling football season.
