Mason Greenwood’s potential return to Manchester United seems increasingly plausible as a summer transfer faces significant obstacles.
The 22-year-old forward recently concluded a successful loan spell at Getafe, where he impressed by scoring eight goals and providing six assists, earning the club’s Player of the Year award.
After leaving Getafe, Greenwood has attracted interest from top European clubs, including Borussia Dortmund, Juventus, Lazio, and Atletico Madrid.
French side Marseille emerged as a frontrunner, with discussions reportedly initiated between the club and Greenwood. Marseille’s new manager, Roberto De Zerbi, is eager to strengthen his squad following his move from Brighton, and Greenwood is seen as a potential addition.
However, a transfer to Marseille now appears unlikely. Financial constraints are one of the primary barriers; the club’s funds are limited due to ongoing uncertainty surrounding Ligue 1 TV rights and their failure to qualify for European competitions after an eighth-place finish in the league last season.
This has hampered their ability to meet Manchester United’s reported asking price of up to £40 million. Additionally, some Marseille supporters have expressed opposition to the potential signing, further complicating negotiations.
Despite these challenges, Manchester United has not entirely ruled out the possibility of Greenwood rejoining the squad.

Club sources suggest that both Greenwood and Jadon Sancho, who also returned from a loan spell at Borussia Dortmund, are expected to report for training if they have not secured transfers elsewhere by the start of pre-season.
Greenwood’s last appearance for Manchester United was in January 2022, following an arrest on charges that were subsequently dropped. After an internal investigation, the club decided it was best for him to play elsewhere, resulting in his loan move to Getafe.
As the transfer window progresses, clubs such as Lazio remain interested, with reports suggesting they have submitted a bid of €20 million. However, this offer, which included a sell-on clause, was rejected by United, who are seeking a higher transfer fee. Meanwhile, Juventus has reportedly proposed an exchange deal involving Federico Chiesa, reflecting ongoing negotiations with multiple clubs.
Greenwood’s immediate future remains uncertain, with several options still on the table. While Manchester United appears open to a sale, the door remains ajar for his return to Old Trafford, contingent on the progress of transfer talks in the coming weeks.
