The 52 year old Argentine said, he doesn’t “need to be loved” after Chelsea fans turned on him in the match against Brentford after yet another disappointing result.
Pochettino brushed off the negative reception from Chelsea fans as they voiced their discontent during the 2-2 draw against Brentford.
Despite initially leading with a Nicolas Jackson header, Chelsea was pulled back by Mads Roerslev’s goal shortly after halftime. Subsequently, Brentford took the lead with Yoane Wissa’s stunning overhead kick, prompting some away fans to chant former manager Jose Mourinho’s name and call for Pochettino’s departure.
Chelsea managed to salvage a point on Pochettino’s 52nd birthday with Axel Disasi’s late equalizer.
Pochettino later expressed that he doesn’t require adoration from supporters, acknowledging his responsibility as the coach and understanding the fans’ frustration during the game.
He emphasized the importance of winning games to solidify the relationship with the fans.
“I’ve been told, I didn’t hear to be honest, it’s difficult for me to understand,” he said.
“But it’s normal, we were losing the game 2-1 and they expressed their frustration. I am one of the ones responsible, I’m the coach.
“I was asked before if I feel the love from the fans. No. I’m not worried – we need to accept this relationship. You win your relationship through winning games.
“I will continue to work and try to change this perception. We need to manage some reality. We are working really hard to try to win games, the team is fighting.
“If it doesn’t work and the fans are disappointed I need to respect their opinion. I think the relationship is good. If they did what they did, fans are emotional.the best way to score goals and win games. Today is my 52nd birthday, I know this business, but I’m going to fight.”
