The New York Mets, following a strong offseason that saw them sign superstar Juan Soto and add four starting pitchers, are still facing uncertainty over the future of Pete Alonso, their franchise cornerstone and the top offensive free agent available.
According to New York Post insider Jon Heyman, there remains a “sizable gap” in negotiations between the Mets and Alonso. As discussions stall, the team is exploring contingency plans, including shifting Mark Vientos to first base and utilizing younger players like Brett Baty or Ronny Mauricio at third base.
Alonso, a three-time All-Star and fan favorite, has been instrumental to the Mets since his record-breaking 53-home-run rookie season. His leadership was pivotal during their playoff run last season, and retaining him is vital for their championship aspirations alongside Juan Soto and Francisco Lindor. However, Alonso’s financial demands require careful consideration from the Mets, even with owner Steve Cohen’s willingness to spend heavily.
The first-base market has been active, with key players like Christian Walker, Paul Goldschmidt, and Carlos Santana securing deals elsewhere. As options for Alonso narrow, the possibility of a Mets reunion increases, though rival teams with playoff ambitions may still aggressively pursue him.
With Opening Day approaching, the Mets face a critical decision: retain their star slugger or risk losing him to competitors.
