Dallas Cowboys head coach Mike McCarthy provided a measured response after team owner Jerry Jones hinted at the possibility of McCarthy receiving a new contract despite the team’s challenging 2024 NFL season.
The Cowboys are struggling with a 4-7 record, currently sitting third in the AFC East. Their playoff chances took a significant blow following the season-ending injury of quarterback Dak Prescott.
However, Jones expressed confidence in McCarthy, stating:
“I don’t think that’s crazy at all. That’s not crazy. Listen, Mike McCarthy is an outstanding coach. He’s been there, done that. He’s got great ideas. The bottom line is, in no place in my body language or anything else have you seen an indication about what we’re going to be doing relative to this staff at the end of this year. And we shouldn’t. We’ve got a lot of football left.”
When asked about his future during a press conference, McCarthy responded with humor, asking reporters:
“Why are you laughing? Crazy? I really haven’t talked about it all year, so I’m definitely not going to start on a short week and an important division game. But I’m not going to throw away positive vibes either, so keep ’em coming. That’s all good. But, yeah, that’s not something I’m really focused on.”
The Cowboys showed resilience last weekend with a 34-26 win over the Washington Commanders, highlighted by an explosive fourth quarter.
McCarthy praised the team’s effort, stating:
“It’s just great to see our guys rewarded for staying the course and grinding it out. The messaging has been great. No one’s blinking with what’s going on around us. It feels good to win.”
Looking ahead, Dallas faces the New York Giants, who recently released quarterback Daniel Jones.
McCarthy remains optimistic stating:
“We’re getting players back like DaRon [Bland] and Micah [Parsons] at full speed. We’re a growing football team, and I think you’re starting to see the benefit of young players stepping up. Hopefully, those moments are beginning to pay off.”
The game against the Giants provides a crucial opportunity for Dallas to revive its season and possibly turn the tide in a difficult year.
