Pittsburgh Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin addressed questions about the team’s strategic use of the “Justin Fields package” during Week 12 against the Cleveland Browns.
Speaking on November 26, Tomlin acknowledged the potential for such packages to disrupt the offensive rhythm but emphasized the benefits outweigh the risks.
“We’re more excited about the challenges that it presents the opposing unit. That’s reflective of our general attitude — we live in our hope as opposed to our fears,” he stated.
Tomlin confirmed that Fields’ role has become an integral part of the Steelers’ offense, describing him as “a viable and capable dude.” However, he avoided revealing specifics, explaining:
“When we use it or how much we utilize it will be dependent on plans week to week.”
He added that the coaching staff feels “comfortable” with their decisions, hinting at a strategic element he chose not to elaborate on.
Starting quarterback Russell Wilson also expressed trust in the approach, noting:
“We have great trust in Justin [Fields] too, and what he’s capable of.” While Wilson admitted he always wants to play, he reiterated his belief in the team-first philosophy, remarking, “Unfortunately, we came up short, but we battled.”
Fields, for his part, welcomed the opportunity to contribute, despite acknowledging the challenges of entering games mid-action.
“At the end of the day, that’s what my job is. Anytime I get a chance to help my team, I’m happy to do it,” he said.
As Fields demonstrated his athleticism with a 30-yard run against the Browns, questions remain about how Pittsburgh will balance his dynamic playmaking with Wilson’s veteran leadership.
