Andy Murray has sharply criticized the scheduling at the Grand Slam tournaments, particularly the US Open, labeling it as “amateurish” following a record-breaking late finish for a women’s match.
In a grueling contest, Qinwen Zheng defeated Donna Vekic 7-6, 4-6, 6-2 on Arthur Ashe Stadium, with the match concluding at 2:15 AM. This set a new record for the latest finish in a women’s match in the tournament’s history. Murray, a strong advocate for women’s tennis, expressed his frustration on social media, calling the situation “a total mess.”
The issue of late match finishes has been a recurring theme at this year’s US Open. Aryna Sabalenka, another top player, also voiced her displeasure after her match extended past midnight.
The late-night scheduling has primarily affected women’s matches, often resulting in sparse crowds and diminishing the atmosphere for key contests. The delays stem from long day sessions, which featured several extended men’s matches, including four-set battles involving Alexander Zverev, Taylor Fritz, and Frances Tiafoe.
Murray’s comments highlight growing concerns about the fairness and professionalism of scheduling at major tournaments.
