Toronto Maple Leafs star forward William Nylander appeared to take a subtle jab at his former coach, Sheldon Keefe, while discussing his position for the upcoming season.
As the Maple Leafs’ training camp began, Nylander revealed he would start the season at center, a decision supported by new coach Craig Berube. Last season, Nylander attempted to play center but was quickly moved back to the wing after just two games.
When asked about what had changed, Nylander humorously referenced his former coach, saying:
“I don’t know. You might have to ask my old coach about that.”
This comment appeared to suggest that Keefe didn’t give him a fair chance at the position. Nylander expressed excitement about Berube’s confidence in him, emphasizing the need for more than just one game to evaluate a player’s potential at center.
Berube, entering his first season as the Leafs’ coach, believes Nylander has the skillset to succeed at center, highlighting his strength, puck-handling abilities, and size. Nylander, who recently signed an eight-year, $92 million contract, is optimistic about the role, hoping for a better outcome this time around.
