Louisville Police Department officer Javar Downs, previously involved in the controversial arrest of golfer Scottie Scheffler, is now under investigation for allegedly stealing $4,000 during a traffic stop.
The incident occurred on Taylor Boulevard in Louisville, where Downs reportedly found an envelope containing $10,000 during the stop. However, when the envelope was later seized for investigation, only $6,000 remained.
In response, the Louisville Police Department has placed Downs on suspension while a thorough investigation is conducted. The department emphasized its commitment to accountability, stating:
“LMPD prioritizes accountability and remains committed to conducting thorough and expedient investigations in the best interests of all parties involved.”
This development comes months after Downs, alongside officer Bryan Gillis, was part of the team that arrested Scheffler outside Valhalla Golf Club ahead of the 2024 PGA Championship.
Scheffler, who was navigating heavy traffic, was charged with second-degree assault of a police officer after allegedly not following instructions. The incident sparked controversy, particularly because none of the officers involved had their body cameras activated.
Valhalla Golf Club police Chief Jacquelyn Gwinn-Villaroel acknowledged this lapse, noting that “Detective Gillis did not have his body-worn camera operationally ready as required by our policy,” adding that this was a violation of department policy. Despite the arrest, Scheffler went on to perform well in the tournament, finishing in eighth place.
