Following another blown lead on Thursday, the Baltimore Orioles’ front office is under immense pressure to make a significant trade to strengthen their bullpen before the July 30 deadline.
Currently, the Orioles are in a tight race with the New York Yankees for the American League East title, holding a precarious two-game lead that could have easily shrunk to one after their latest game against the Miami Marlins.
During the game, the Orioles entered the top of the ninth inning with a 6-3 lead, seemingly on track for a straightforward victory. However, closer Craig Kimbrel, tasked with securing the win, faltered dramatically. He allowed three Marlins to score before being pulled from the game with two outs, marking his sixth blown save of the season. This latest failure underscores a critical issue: Kimbrel’s unreliability in high-stakes situations could jeopardize Baltimore’s postseason aspirations.
The Orioles possess a wealth of valuable trade assets in their minor league system, providing them with the leverage to pursue top-tier relievers available on the market. Notable candidates include Miami Marlins’ Tanner Scott, who boasts a 1.24 ERA in 42 appearances this season, making him a prime target. Another option is Boston Red Sox’s veteran closer Kenley Jansen, who, despite being past his prime, could serve as a reliable setup man.
Additionally, Los Angeles Angels’ Carlos Estevez has emerged as a strong closer and might be a more affordable alternative.
Tampa Bay Rays’ Pete Fairbanks, known for his reliability, offers another viable option and comes with the added benefit of being under team control for another season. Lastly, Oakland Athletics’ Mason Miller, despite a recent injury, remains an enticing prospect with electrifying skills and long-term potential.
As the trade deadline approaches, the Orioles must act decisively to enhance their bullpen if they aim to be serious contenders for the 2024 title.
