Aberdeen midfielder Connor Barron is poised to join Rangers as his contract with Aberdeen comes to an end.
The 21-year-old has attracted interest from multiple clubs across Europe, but it appears that Rangers have won the race to secure his signature.
Earlier this month, Aberdeen confirmed that Barron would leave the club when his contract expires. The midfielder’s potential move to Rangers follows a concerted effort by the Ibrox club to sign him on a free transfer, as reported by the Daily Record.
Rangers’ improved offer has reportedly outmatched interest from clubs such as Bologna, Hellas Verona, Plymouth, Stoke, Cardiff, and Swansea.
Philippe Clement, Rangers’ manager, is keen to integrate Barron into his squad as part of a broader summer overhaul.
The Rangers Review has noted that the club is “poised” to finalize the deal, having “seen off” competition from both English and Italian clubs. If Barron had moved to a club outside of Scotland, Aberdeen would have been entitled to approximately £525,000 in training compensation.
The transfer is expected to be completed before Rangers commence pre-season training on Monday. This signing marks a significant addition for Clement, who is also eyeing further reinforcements, including goalkeeper Liam Kelly after Euro 2024 and Bayern Munich forward Yusuf Kadabayi.
Barron’s departure from Aberdeen is part of a series of changes at the club, which has already seen new arrivals and releases in preparation for the upcoming season.
